When I Walk

When I walk in nature, at dusk, especially,
the whole wide world opens itself up
and reveals things to me.
The way my strides ground into the Earth
Muscles bouncing along rhythmically—
feels like a party, full of mirth.
I could sing, but I don’t; I just smile,
And step, one foot in front of the other,
Cleanly, clearly, mile after mile.
Tonight, the fireflies came out to do their thing,
Intervals of flickering, on and off and on again,
Knowing well the light, the joy they bring.
